With the year moving so fast, I was just thinking about the upcoming holidays and all of the fun ahead. The year has been a bit strange, progressive, and very tough at times. For some reason there has been a lot more health issues around me, creating lots of stress. I’m the type that spins things positive at every turn. Even doing so, it is pretty tough to not let things get to you.
For the holidays, here is my quick advice, in bullet-point form;
- don’t take anything too seriously- comments, conversations, food, clothes, etc… This is a time to relax and rejoice. Don’t be your own worst enemy by taking things too personally. Things get said; things get dropped; things get broken; obstacles occur. Let things slide off you often and, seriously, forget them. That is the key. You’ll feel better. Start off with understanding and don’t be so rigid you can’t alter things because of the circumstance
- don’t feel that grand gestures are more important than small ones. Everyone is in different positions in this world and is able to do different things. Buy me a 100 presents, draw me a picture, or make me a meal are all equal in my eyes. You don’t need to go broke or stress yourself out trying to make sure a big gesture is made.
- family and friends are important. Go out of your way to personally touch base and contact every person with whom you have a relationship with. Time does move fast and sometimes months (even years) can go by without touching base and/or spending time together. This is a good time of year to take some time to reach out. Social media helps with this but, do me a favor, don’t do it in mass. Email, call, contact each person individually.
- This is a perfect time to examine your life and see how you can help and support those around you. I believe in volunteering, even as little as once a month. I try to do different fundraisers and support the various organizations that need the help (Red Cross, Salvation Army) etc… Beyond all that, try to pay attention to the lives and careers of those close to you. There is always opportunities to support them but so often we think of fast and convenient over friends and family. Drive a little further, pay a little more, buy just because,and spread the word. This is life-affecting and a year-long gift. Again, social media like Facebook are great resources to find out how to do this, as most profiles contain the necessary information.
That’s all for now.
